Everyone around the world, regardless of gender, caste, or creed, will experience sadness at some point in their lives. Feeling sad is only one symptom of depression, but they are not the same, and every episode of sadness is not depression.

What is Sadness?

Sadness, like any other human emotion, is also a normal human emotion triggered by any events or situations, including experiencing a breakup or divorce,losing loved ones,facing rejection, failure, disappointment and feeling lonely or isolated.In short, we feel sad when, due to any situation or life events, we fail to meet our expectations.Sadness is a temporary feeling that typically change within short period of time, as the person adapts with new situations or circumstances.Sadness also have some positive aspects including it lead to introspection,fostering empathy ,compation and connection.

What is depression and how different from sadness?

Depression is a mental health disorder which characterized by persistent feeling of sadness, worthlessness, hopelessness, changes in sleep and appetite and even suicidal thoughts. Depression will create significant impairement in daily life both personal and professional life, relationships and will affect physically by showing symptoms like fatigue ,head ache body pain etc.

The treatment of adjustment disorder aims to alleviate symptoms, enhance coping mechanisms, and improve overall well-being. It often involves a combination of approaches, including psychotherapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to provide effective coping strategies.


Sadness is a natural response to life situations and will typically normalize without any treatment, where depression is a mental health condition that requires proper treatment which lasts for weeks to years.Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are the major treatment options for depression, and in some cases, both will be used. The severity of the issue is the crucial factor that decides the treatment plan.
