Somatoform disorders

Somatoform disorders are a group of mental condition characterized by bodily symptoms that cannot be explained by any medical or neurological condition . These bodily issues may significantly disturbe daily activities and are caused by psychological factors.

These disorders are primarily characterized by the presence of physical complaints or symptoms, which cause significant distress or impairment in daily functioning.In SSD, individuals experience one or more distressing physical symptoms that may or may not be associated with a diagnosed medical condition. Excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors related to the symptoms, such as anxiety, are a characteristic feature of this disorder.

Symptoms of somatoform disorders.

• Pain in many parts of body without any specific reason.
• Exessive and consistent thoughts,feelings about the bodily discomfort,along with related behaviours.
• Shortness of breath.
• Fatigue or weakness.
• Gastrointestinal complaints.
• Presenting normal psysical signs as a symptom of a severe physical illness.
• Spending huge time,energy and money on their physical symptoms.

If an individual presents symptoms without apparent reason and all medical test report shows normal result, it is necessary to consult a mental health provider.


Types of Somatoform disorders

• Somatization disorder occurs when someone persistantly complaints about physical symptoms and there is no identifiable cause is presented.

• Conversion disorder is presentation of physical symptoms which represents any neurological impairement in absence of neurological disorders.

• Pain disorder characterised by presentation of pain in one or more parts of body in absence of medical or neurological explanation.

•Hypochondriasis occurs when a individual projects his/ her normal body signs or minor issues to a severe,life threatening symptom.

Causes

Occurance of somatoform disorders is a combination of many factors including genetics, environmental,family influence, personality traits,learned behaviour and hypersensitivity.

Treatment

A combination of psychotherapy and medication is used to treat somatoform disorders. Proper insight for the client and supportive family environment can facilitate the treatment procedure.
